Three middle-age guards learn that their museum has sold a wing of art to a Danish museum. Each has a favorite in that collection, and none can imagine life without the peace and completion it brings. Though mere acquaintances, they plot a theft of the three pieces between the time they are packed and the time they’re loaded onto a plane. First each must obtain a forgery; then, they have to smuggle the forgeries into the museum and find a way to make the switches. The heist is complicated by Roger’s intrusive wife – he’s promised her a trip to Florida for their anniversary – and George’s proclivity for taking his clothes off when standing in front of the warrior statue he loves.

Film Review

Three Museum Security Guards learn their favorite artwork pieces are being transferred to another museum and they decide keep them where they are. This is really too subdued a story, bland, too comfortable. In comedies we are used to seeing Macy lose it and he does a good job doing this; Walken bellowing with that wonderful cadence (oh, he does this in dramas too) ; and Freeman with his facial expressions and good one-liners (he does this in dramas too). We saw none of that in here. Not that the actors didn't try, but the script just wasn't right for those moments. The script could have been, but it was like someone had a noise meter and wouldn't allow anyone to go beyond a certain level. Big mistake. Hence, no comedy, no suspense, no comedic tension where there should have been. The only one who showed any passion and went slightly above the noise level meter was Ms Harden when she tries to figure out what is going on with husband Roger (Walken), who doesn't let h…

This movie shows way too much of William H. Macy's buttocks. I might have rated this movie higher if we could have gotten an equal amount of Marcia Gay Harden's buttocks. As naggy as she was I'll bet she's fine to see without clothes…like a naked maiden. Macy is always good, otherwise. Morgan Freeman's role was refreshing as a meek, sensitive artist rather than his typical avuncular guy. Christopher Walken is always good but I missed his straight up big hair that he sports on talk shows — probably not appropriate for this role. Jeremy Lipking's painting, "The Lonely Maiden", grew on me. I'm not the most knowledgeable art apprecianado but it is a piece like this that opens up the mind. I hope it is on its way to terre classique.

THE MAIDEN HEIST (there is a more to the title than you might think) is like getting together with old friends for a chuckle. Michael LeSieur has written a feel good comedy and Peter Hewitt has directed that script with the help of a fine cast and the results are a fun film that has some gentle hidden messages about friendship, relationships, and loving your job. A Boston art museum is making plans to ship an exhibition of works to Denmark. This news is hocking and upsetting to three of the museum guards: Charles (Morgan Freeman, in a subtle gender twist) is passionate for a painting of a girl with cats, Roger (Christopher) is literally enamored by a painting of a lonely girl on a beach, and military minded George (William H. Macy) is so obsessed by a bronze sculpture of an athlete that he secretly poses au natural imitating the pose of the athlete when no one is around. When these three works are designated to be part of the shipment to Denmark the three men pop into action – they fi…
