The mission takes on new and dangerous twists as the crew finds out that all is not as it seems at Zebra, and that someone will stop at nothing to prevent the mission from being completed.

Film Review

This film was very interesting and mysterious with icy wind blowing all the time and constant snowing falling in sub-freezing weather. It was great to see a nuclear sub surface through large craters of ice which almost closed in on them by moving icebergs. Rock Hudson, (Cdr. James Ferraday) tries to locate Ice Station Zebra which is a station located in the Artic and there has been no communication coming from this station. Ernest Borgnine, (Boris Vaslov) and Patrick McGoohan, (David Jones) assist James Ferraday on his mission to locate a very important film which was taken by a space station and it contained all the locations of where American Nuclear sites and also other Russian military information. Naturally, the Russian's want to obtain this film before the Americans and there are spy's who are working within Cdr Ferraday's military staff. Very entertaining film with great acting by Ernest Borgnine and Patrick McGoohan who held this picture together. Yes, there are no…

The years haven't been kind to Ice Station Zebra; today it's mainly known as crazy Howard Hughes's favorite movie, or the film that pushed 2001: A Space Odyssey out of theaters. It's notorious for its glacial (ha ha) pacing, static compositions, wooden performances and sub-par special effects. I had seen it long ago on television (chopped up and panned/scanned) and didn't remember it being all that interesting. I decided to re-watch it recently after listening to a recording of Michel Legrand's excellent score.Guess what? I liked it.ISZ isn't a great film by any stretch of the imagination. The plot is pretty thin and it feels padded; it's probably at least half an hour longer than it needs to be. Once you get past the laborious opening scenes, though, it's hard not to be drawn into the story. A real submarine was used for exterior shots and there are some amazing POV shots of diving and surfacing. The interiors are amazingly detailed and you have a …

I saw Ice Station Zebra as I do like all three main actors, and this did seem like an interesting film. Sadly, while Ice Station Zebra is not a complete waste, it just didn't deliver in my opinion.I will start with the positives, the settings are spectacular with the photography capturing it very nicely, and the music gives the meaning to the words intense and dynamite. There are also two good performances, Rock Hudson is very likable and charismatic, and Patrick McGoohan is an always welcome presence in a very tight yet quite subtle performance. However, I wish I could say the same for Ernest Borgnine, I am very fond of Borgnine but I found he overacted here with an accent that sounded more silly than believable. The support cast just don't have enough enough time to shine. I think the main problem with Ice Station Zebra is the story, not the concept itself, I could tell right off the bat that a powerful telling of it was intended.Instead it was devoid of tension and suspens…
