Johnny McQueen, leader of a clandestine Irish organization, has been hiding in the house of Kathleen and her mother, planning a hold-up that will provide his group with the funds needed to continue its activities. During the hold-up, things go sour: Johnny is wounded, cannot make it back to the hideout, and disappears in the back-alleys of Belfast. Immediately, a large-scale man-hunt is launched, and the city is tightly covered by the constabulary, whose chief is intent on capturing Johnny and the other members of the gang. Kathleen sets out in search of Johnny.

After a bungled Post Office robbery, attempted to gain funds for the Army's continuing guerrilla war for independence, area commander McQueen barely escapes with his life. Badly wounded and pursued by the authorities like a trapped animal, Mason gives a hunted and haunted quality to McQueen as he lurks in the rain-soaked back alleys of the city to avoid capture. We also have great character turns from such luminaries of the British screen as Doctor Who's William Hartnell as a gruff barkeeper, and Long John Silver himself, Robert Newton as a deranged and drunken artist who off…
